Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a restriction in shoulder motion as a result of inflammation and fibrosis of shoulder joint capsule due to disuse or repetitive microtrauma. However, most of the time the main reason is not clear.
People with diabetes, thyroid disease or individuals with one frozen shoulder are prone to have it on the other shoulder as well.
It mostly happens between the ages of 40 - 65 and to women more than men.
There are 3 stages of frozen shoulder
Stage 1 - Acute or freezing stage: it takes between 2 to 8 months to begin. Pain and limitation of movement are the main symptoms in this stage
Stage 2 - Subacute or frozen stage: between 4 to 12 months to begin. Pain subsides and is only in movements. However, significant adhesion and limitation will be the main issues.
stage 3 - final Stage or chronic stage takes around 12 months to begin. No pain in this stage even in movements, but movements are severely restricted.
The best treatment for frozen shoulder is always physiotherapy. The sooner the better.
If you feel pain in your shoulder for more than a week and/or some restriction in your shoulder movements, see your physiotherapist as soon as possible.
